Toscana, Bighorn, The Madison Club, The Hideaway, The Reserve, The Vintage Club and other premier desert communities each offer a very different experience. The right choice often comes down to the lifestyle you want, the type of home you prefer, your golf priorities, social atmosphere, location and budget.
For buyers considering a home in a private club, understanding those differences can make the search considerably easier.
What Makes a Great Coachella Valley Golf Community?
There really isn’t one “best” golf community in the desert.
A club that is perfect for one buyer may be completely wrong for another. Some buyers want exceptional golf to be the center of their experience. Others care more about dining, fitness, pickleball, social activities or having a place where children and grandchildren will enjoy visiting.
Privacy can also mean different things. One buyer may want an extremely exclusive club with large custom estates and a high level of service, while another may prefer a more active community where it’s easy to meet people and build a social circle.
Before looking at individual homes, I generally recommend thinking about a few priorities:
- How important is golf compared with the overall club lifestyle?
- Do you prefer a highly private environment or a more active social community?
- Are fitness, tennis and pickleball important?
- Will children or grandchildren visit frequently?
- Do you want a custom estate or something easier to maintain?
- How important are mountain, fairway or water views?
- Do you prefer Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage or La Quinta?
- What are you comfortable spending on the home, membership and ongoing club expenses?
Once those questions are answered, the number of communities worth considering can become much smaller.ive luxury properties.
Palm Desert Golf Communities
Palm Desert is an excellent choice for buyers who want to be centrally located in the Coachella Valley while still enjoying a private-club lifestyle.
Bighorn Golf Club
Bighorn is one of Palm Desert’s premier luxury golf communities, known for dramatic mountain surroundings, contemporary architecture and two championship golf courses.
Homes range from sophisticated residences to significant custom estates, and the community appeals to buyers looking for a combination of luxury real estate, golf and an extensive club lifestyle.
The Reserve Club
Set against the Santa Rosa Mountains, The Reserve offers a more intimate private-club environment with striking desert scenery.
Its real estate includes a range of residences from smaller lock-and-leave options to substantial custom homes, making it worth considering for buyers who want the amenities of a luxury club without necessarily wanting a large estate.
The Lakes Country Club
The Lakes offers a different proposition from communities dominated by large custom homes. Its residences are primarily attached and condominium-style homes centered around golf, lakes and an active club environment.
For buyers who value amenities, social activity and lower-maintenance desert living, The Lakes can be an attractive option.
Indian Ridge Country Club
Indian Ridge is another Palm Desert community with a particularly active club lifestyle. It features two Arnold Palmer Signature golf courses along with extensive fitness, racquet and social amenities.
The combination of homes and attached residences also gives buyers a variety of options at different price points.
Indian Wells Golf Communities
Indian Wells contains some of the valley’s most established and prestigious private clubs, with real estate ranging from relatively low-maintenance homes to extraordinary custom estates.
Toscana Country Club
Toscana combines two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses with extensive fitness, racquet, dining and social amenities.
The real estate varies significantly within the community, from earlier traditional Toscana architecture to extensively remodeled and contemporary homes. Location within Toscana matters as well. View direction, lot position, privacy and the relationship between the home and golf course can make two seemingly similar properties feel very different.
For buyers comparing Toscana homes, I believe it’s particularly important to understand the individual streets, views and floor plans rather than simply comparing price per square foot.
The Vintage Club
The Vintage is one of the desert’s most established luxury private clubs and has long been associated with exceptional service, golf and high-end custom real estate.
Its homes include substantial estates, and it appeals to buyers seeking a very private, established club environment in Indian Wells.
Eldorado Country Club
Eldorado is another iconic Indian Wells club with a long history in the desert. It offers an established private-club atmosphere, golf and a collection of distinctive homes.
For buyers who appreciate the character and tradition of the valley’s longstanding clubs, Eldorado deserves consideration.
Desert Horizons Country Club
Desert Horizons provides a private Indian Wells setting with golf, racquet sports, fitness, dining and social activities.
Its location is particularly convenient for buyers who want easy access to both Indian Wells and Palm Desert.
These details can affect both your lifestyle and the long-term cost of ownership.
La Quinta Golf Communities
La Quinta has one of the largest concentrations of high-end golf and private-club communities in the Coachella Valley.
The Madison Club
The Madison Club occupies the very top end of the desert luxury market. The private Discovery Land Company community features a Tom Fazio-designed golf course and a highly service-oriented club environment.
Its custom estates can be among the most significant residential properties in the Coachella Valley. For buyers seeking exceptional privacy, luxury and a resort-style experience, Madison belongs in the conversation.
The Hideaway
The Hideaway is another highly regarded La Quinta private club with two golf courses and an impressive collection of custom and semi-custom homes.
The community is known for beautiful golf and mountain settings, and homes can offer some spectacular combinations of architecture, outdoor living and views.
Tradition Golf Club
Tradition offers an intimate private-club experience tucked against the mountains in La Quinta.
Its setting and architecture give it a distinctive character, and it can be especially appealing to buyers looking for privacy and a strong sense of place.
Rancho La Quinta Country Club
Rancho La Quinta offers two 18-hole golf courses along with extensive racquet, fitness, dining and social amenities.
It can be a good fit for buyers looking for an active club environment with a broad range of homes and amenities.
Other Private Clubs Worth Considering
The desert has many more communities worth exploring, including Ironwood Country Club, Tamarisk Country Club, Andalusia Country Club and others.
That’s one reason I don’t believe buyers should begin with a list of the “top five” clubs and assume one of them must be the answer.
The better approach is to identify what matters to you and then compare the communities that deliver that experience.
Don’t Choose the Club Based Only on the House
One of the biggest mistakes a buyer can make is falling in love with a house before deciding whether they love the community.
You can remodel a kitchen, update a bathroom or redesign a backyard. You can’t move the house to another club.
Before purchasing, understand the membership structure, initiation costs and dues, golf access, guest policies, dining, fitness and racquet facilities, social calendar, HOA expenses and any upcoming assessments or improvements.
It’s also worth spending time at the club. Tour the facilities, have lunch, play golf when possible and get a sense of the people and atmosphere.
The View Matters More Than Many Buyers Realize
Within the same community, location can have a major impact on both the experience of living in a home and its desirability.
A great golf-course view isn’t simply about being on the course. Mountain orientation, morning versus afternoon sun, water features, privacy from neighboring homes, distance from cart paths and the position of the home relative to the fairway can all matter.
Two homes with similar square footage in the same community can therefore be very different properties.
Finding the Right Desert Club
For me, the process starts with lifestyle.
Do you envision mornings on the golf course followed by lunch at the club? Are fitness and pickleball more important than golf? Do you want an active social calendar? Will your children and grandchildren spend holidays with you? Would you rather have a contemporary custom estate or a home you can lock and leave?
Those answers tell us much more than simply asking which club is “best.”
